Patek Philippe Serial Numbers
Date a Patek Philippe from its movement serial — and know when to get the Extract.
Patek Philippe engraves two separate serial numbers: one on the movement and one inside the case. They don't match each other, and the movement number is the one collectors use to date a watch. Both are sequential, with no embedded year code, so dating means matching the movement serial to published ranges.
Enter your movement serial below for an estimate. For anything valuable or vintage, the definitive answer comes from Patek's Extract from the Archives — an official document stating the exact manufacture date, reference, and original configuration.

Approximate movement production years compiled from collector references (Huber & Banbery and related works). The movement number dates the movement, which may have been cased and sold a little later. The case serial runs on a separate sequence.
Where to Find Your Patek Philippe Serial Numbers
The movement serial is engraved on the movement itself — on a bridge or plate. On a watch with a sapphire display back you can read it without opening anything; on a solid caseback, a watchmaker has to open the case.
The case serial is engraved inside the caseback (or on the inner ring of a display back). It's a different number on a different sequence — don't expect it to match the movement serial.
Both numbers, plus the reference, are recorded on the Certificate of Origin and in Patek's archives, so your papers are the easiest place to read them if you have them.
How to Read a Patek Philippe Serial Number
Patek serials are purely numeric and sequential, with no randomization and no embedded year code. Modern movement serials are six to seven digits; older ones are shorter. Because the movement and case numbers are independent, always date from the movement number and use the case number only as a consistency check.
Match the movement serial to the chart for an approximate year. Then — for any meaningful purchase — confirm it with an Extract from the Archives, which is treated as the authoritative record of a vintage Patek's date and original specification.
Decoding the Patek Reference Number
Patek references combine a model number with a material/strap code, e.g. 5711/1A-010 — 5711 is the Nautilus model, 1A is the steel-bracelet version, and 010 is the specific dial configuration. The reference identifies the model and configuration; the movement and case serials identify the individual watch.
The Extract from the Archives is issued for watches older than about five years and states the movement number, case number, reference, caliber, and exact date of manufacture (and original sale, when known). It's requested through Patek or an authorized retailer for a fee.
Frequently asked questions
Which Patek serial number dates the watch — movement or case?
The movement serial. Patek issues independent sequential numbers for the movement and the case; collectors date the watch from the movement number and use the case number as a cross-check.
Why don't my Patek's two serial numbers match?
They're not supposed to. The movement serial and case serial run on separate sequences. A mismatch is normal; what matters is that both are present, unaltered, and consistent with the claimed era.
What is the Extract from the Archives?
An official Patek Philippe document, issued for a fee, that confirms the exact date of manufacture, reference, caliber, and original configuration from factory records. It's the authoritative way to date and authenticate a vintage Patek.
Can I date a modern Patek from the serial alone?
Only approximately. Patek serials remain sequential rather than randomized, so the chart still works, but for a recent watch the Certificate of Origin gives the precise date directly.
