What to check on a Calatrava
The dial. Patek refinished dials at service for decades, and on a reference 96 or a 2526 the dial is most of the price. Printing should be crisp and consistent, the signature and the minute track in the right fonts for the year, and the lume, where there is any, aged evenly. Our verifier compares each dial to the reference's production record and says so in the report.
Case and hallmarks. A Calatrava case was polished at every service; crisp lugs and visible hallmarks on the lug or the caseback mark an example that has been left alone. Over-polishing shows as softened edges and lugs that no longer match.
Papers and the extract. For a modern Calatrava the box, certificate and service papers are expected, and their absence is a discount. For a vintage one, an extract from the Patek archives states what the watch was when it left Geneva, and it is worth asking for.
What a Calatrava costs here, by era
Where enough recent sales exist, each era above shows a typical range, built from dealer, auction and Grey Market sales for the references in it and rounded to a band. A steel 96 or a 2526 with an enamel dial sits far above the gold watches of the same reference; a 5196 in rose gold above the same watch in yellow.
Auctions here open low and run without a reserve, so a lot's closing price is whatever the room decides that week. The sold results on this page are what Calatravas have actually gone for here, before the buyer's premium.
Buying a Patek Philippe Calatrava here
No. Every Grey Market auction runs without a reserve, so the highest bid when the clock runs out wins the watch. Bidding opens low on purpose; the price is set by the people bidding, not by a minimum the seller chose. Auctions run for seven days and extend briefly when a bid lands in the final minutes, so a last-second bid cannot close a lot before everyone has answered it.
