What separates vintage from neo-vintage in a Patek Philippe
Patek collectors date by reference family rather than by crystal or lume. The vintage core is the mid-century reference 96 Calatrava and the complicated watches that made the brand's auction reputation: the 1518 and 2499 perpetual chronographs, the 3448 perpetual. The neo-vintage era runs from the 1985 reference 3940 perpetual calendar through the four-digit references of the 1990s and early 2000s (3970, 5035, 5065, 5146, 5196), and the five-digit watches of the last fifteen years are modern.
What changes across those eras is less the look than the paperwork. A vintage Patek is judged on originality and an extract from the archives, which states what the watch left Geneva as; a neo-vintage one on completeness, since the box, the certificate and the service history are expected to be present, and a watch without them is priced as such.
Service, and what the verification report says
Patek services its own watches and keeps the records, so a Patek with a service history is a documented object in a way few vintage watches are. The flip side is that dials and hands were refinished at service for decades, and a refinished dial on a 1950s Calatrava is the most common thing that separates an honest example from a correct one. Our verifier opens every auction lot and notes what is original to the reference: the dial and its printing, the hands, the case and its hallmarks, the caseback, the calibre and its finishing. The report ships with the watch, and the listing's condition notes say the same things before you bid.
Serials are read in hand and never shown in full on a listing. The Patek Philippe serial number guide dates a movement you are considering.
What Patek Philippe costs here, by family
Where enough recent sales exist, the table above shows a typical range beside each family, built from dealer, auction and Grey Market sales for the references on that family's page and rounded to a band. Patek ranges run from a steel Calatrava or an annual calendar at one end to perpetual chronographs at the other, several multiples apart; metal matters as much as complication, with steel and platinum at opposite poles of the same reference.
Auctions here open low and run without a reserve, so a lot's closing price is whatever the room decides that week. The sold results on this page are what Patek Philippe has actually gone for here, before the buyer's premium.
Buying a Patek Philippe here
No. Every Grey Market auction runs without a reserve, so the highest bid when the clock runs out wins the watch. Bidding opens low on purpose; the price is set by the people bidding, not by a minimum the seller chose. Auctions run for seven days and extend briefly when a bid lands in the final minutes, so a last-second bid cannot close a lot before everyone has answered it.
