On the dial side, the most reliable generation cue is the small coronet set between “SWISS” and “MADE” at 6 o’clock. Two dials have been offered from launch, black and white (“Polar”), and as of mid-2026 there is no documented split into additional dial generations within the 226570 reference.

The 16570 sits one step further back as the long-running 40 mm reference whose dial and lume evolution created the kind of in-run variety the 226570 has not (yet) developed.

Buying a Rolex Explorer II 226570 is less about decoding obscure production eras and more about confirming that a recent, still-current professional Rolex remains coherent and unmodified. With no established in-run “Mark” dial generations, most pricing differences are driven by dial color, condition, and whether the watch is a full set.

The one enduring market pattern is that the white “Polar” tends to trade at a modest premium over the black dial in secondary-market data, even though both share the same retail positioning.
