The Cartier Tank WSTA0041 is the Tank with no puzzle in it. Since its introduction in 2021 it has existed as one documented configuration (steel case, silvered Roman dial, black calfskin strap, quartz movement), with no dial marks, movement generations or metal variants to separate one example from another, so what a buyer is really paying for is condition, completeness and a clean set of papers. Even the word "Large" in its catalogue name is relative: the case measures 33.7 × 25.5 mm and 6.6 mm thick, a compact rectangle beside the 41 × 31 mm automatic WSTA0040 that launched in the same Tank Must relaunch.

That relaunch is the context for the watch. Cartier presented the 2021 Tank Must as the successor to the Tank Solo line, though no single Solo reference is documented as WSTA0041's predecessor, and WSTA0041, WSTA0042 and WSTA0040 read as a family launch sorted by size and movement rather than a chain of replacements. The details are the Tank's familiar ones: blued sword-shaped hands, a beaded crown set with a blue synthetic spinel cabochon, a sapphire crystal, and a rating of 30 m that is a splash allowance, not a swimming one. The movement is quartz, described by Cartier and retailers only as high-autonomy and showing hours and minutes. One secondary source names it calibre 157, while Cartier's own specifications give no calibre.

“One configuration since 2021: with nothing rare to hunt, the best WSTA0041 is simply the best-kept one.”

Production timeline

Cartier Tank WSTA0041 production years: 2021–at least 2025

The WSTA0041 exists because Cartier relaunched the Tank Must in 2021 and presented it as the successor to the Tank Solo line. The reason for splitting the relaunch into a quartz large, a quartz small and an automatic extra-large is not documented, but the result is visible in the catalogue: WSTA0042 is a smaller quartz at roughly 29.5 × 22 mm, while WSTA0040 moves to 41 × 31 mm and the automatic 1847 MC calibre. The three read as a family launch, and WSTA0041 sits in the middle as the thin quartz option. Colour-dial siblings followed in the same period, among them a burgundy reference 4323 sold in October 2021 and the green WSTA0056, whose marketplace listings run from 2021 onward. Cartier's SolarBeat Tank Must arrived as a different reference, WSTA0059, not as a later movement in the WSTA0041. After that, the record goes quiet. Listings dated 2021 through 2025 describe the same steel case, silvered dial and quartz movement, with no documented change of dial, movement or case across them, and no discontinuation date or replacement reference has been established. A watch that has held one specification through its documented run leaves little to date, and that is the point of it.

Buying guide

What to check before buying a WSTA0041

The risk in buying a WSTA0041 is not misreading a variant, because none is documented, but paying a premium for a story. Claims of a special dial, a lucky serial prefix or a "transitional" configuration are collector lore unless Cartier documentation backs them, and the real differences between examples are condition, completeness and service history.

The people who reach for this watch want the Tank's silhouette without the weight of a gold case or a vintage purchase. At 6.6 mm thick it slides under a cuff, and used examples have commonly changed hands in the region of US$2,700 to US$3,300 (approximate, and asking prices run higher), a price that rewards the buyer who insists on a good one rather than a rare one.

Complete, dated set

Cartier box and a warranty card with a purchase date are the one premium that holds up, because they improve provenance and resale. A like-new dealer example with 2023 papers is the model. Check that the reference and serial on the papers match the case.

Case and crystal condition

Look for over-polishing that has softened the straight brancards and the crisp rectangular corners; it cannot be restored perfectly. Check the sapphire for corner chips, which matter more than hairline scratches, and the caseback engraving for sharpness.

Dial and hands

The dial should show clean, even Roman numerals, a chemin-de-fer minute track and properly shaped blued sword hands. Uneven printing, spotting or lacquer suggests refinishing or moisture. The hands and markers are non-luminous, so any claim of factory lume needs strong documentation.

Crown, strap and buckle

The crown should show the blue cabochon, a synthetic spinel rather than a natural sapphire. The original is a black grained calfskin strap with a steel pin buckle. A replacement is common and not a fault, but it should be priced accordingly, and the original parts are worth having.

Battery, seals and water

The 30 m rating is not a dive specification, and some marketplace listings even state "not water resistant". Ask when the battery was last changed, whether the gasket was replaced and whether the case was pressure-tested, since battery leakage can damage a quartz movement.

Rarity claims and dimensions

Listed sizes of about 25.4–25.5 × 32.6–33.7 mm reflect how the seller measured, not separate variants. Serials beginning 432 appear on dealer examples, but a prefix is not a dating rule without Cartier records. Do not accept one as proof of authenticity either.
