W1529856 is a watch that stayed still while its numbers moved. Turn one over and the case back does not say W1529856: on a listed example the serial is preceded by 2442, the model number of the small yellow-gold quartz Tank Louis Cartier, and resellers describe the watch as the small model 2442. W1529856 is the catalogue code under which that same watch was sold. One dealer adds a third number, reporting that in late 2024 Cartier replaced the code with WGTA0342 and changed nothing but its internal part number.

The watch behind the numbers is consistent in the features dealers describe, from papers of 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2019 to an auction lot of 2026: a small 18k yellow-gold quartz case of about 29.5 × 22 mm (the 2026 lot says 30 × 22), a silvered Roman-numeral dial (that lot calls it gray) and blued-steel sword hands. Crystal and thickness figures conflict between dealers, but no record describes a different calibre or case. An authorised retailer's description ties the model to the 1921 revision of the 1917 Tank, which slightly lengthened the case and became known as the Tank LC, or Tank Louis Cartier.

“The numbers moved; the small gold Tank did not.”

Production timeline

Cartier Tank W1529856 production years: c. 2010s

The dated evidence for W1529856 is papers rather than production records, and it is consistent on case, dial and movement. A retailer gives one example an age of 2010; receipts and warranty cards dated 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2019 accompany others; a Geneva Auctions lot in April 2026 describes the same 30 × 22 mm gold quartz watch with blued hands and black Roman numerals. When the W1529856 code was first assigned is not documented. Seller-entered years as early as 2001 appear on marketplace aggregates, and a 1979-dated auction record sometimes attached to this reference carries no reference number at all, so neither is evidence for it.

The order of the numbers has to be inferred. What is documented is that Archiva lists the small quartz yellow-gold Tank Louis as ref. 2442 in an era group headed 1993 to 2001, a grouping rather than a production span, and that 2442 opens the caseback serial on at least one listed W1529856. The earliest W1529856 papers found date from 2013. Together that suggests W1529856 is a later catalogue code for a model already numbered 2442, rather than a new design; the reason for the code and its date are not documented, so the reading remains an inference.

The reported 2024 change fits the same pattern, though it rests on one dealer and no Cartier confirmation was found; listings dated 2025 and 2026 may be old stock or misdated. Taken together, the record shows a Tank whose numbers changed faster than its shape. An authorised retailer's description ties the design to the Tank LC of 1921; the numbering attached to it has shifted more than once since, and no documented change to the case, dial or movement went with it.

How to tell it apart

W1529856 against its neighbours

Two references bracket W1529856 by size and construction: 2441, the larger quartz gold Tank Louis from the same Archiva era group, and the Tank Solo W5200004, a bigger, more contemporary quartz Tank in gold with a steel back.

One configuration, no marks

One one configuration, no marks across the run

This is the only configuration the evidence supports: a rectangular 18k yellow-gold case of 29.5 × 22 mm, a grained silvered dial with black Roman numerals and a minute track, blued-steel sword hands, a beaded crown with a sapphire cabochon, and a quartz movement. Dealers call the dial silver, silvered, white, ivory or gray, and a 2026 auction lot says gray. No production window is attached to any of these words, so they may reflect photography or catalogue wording, though the colour should still be checked on the watch. Length quoted as 29.5 or 30 mm is most likely rounding. The 6.35 and 6.8 mm thickness figures are an unresolved difference between two dealers. A dial outside those descriptions, or hands that are not blue, raises an originality question rather than suggesting a rare variant.

Buying guide

What to check before buying a W1529856

With no variants to chase, a W1529856 is judged on condition, completeness and originality. Dealer asking prices around 2026 have run from about $8,700 for a visibly worn example to about $12,500 for unworn full sets; these are asking prices, not realised sales, and a claimed early or special run has no documented basis. The top of that range is the price of a new one: an authorised retailer lists the same W1529856 at $12,400. Anyone shopping for this watch is choosing between that counter and a used example, and a used W1529856 earns its place only by being nearly as good as new or clearly cheaper.

Case sharpness

The Tank depends on crisp geometry. Rounded brancards, softened corners or thin-looking lugs mean over-polishing, and gold dents cannot be fixed without altering the case.

Complete set

Original box, papers, receipts and service history lift confidence and liquidity. Papers alone prove nothing, since counterfeit and swapped documents exist, so check that the serial engraved on the case back (where it carries a 2442 prefix, the digits after it) matches the warranty card.

Dial and hands

Standard is a silver or ivory dial with black Roman numerals and blue hands. Check under magnification for repainted numerals, uneven printing or hands of the wrong blue; a clean dial can still be refinished.

Movement and caliber

Have a watchmaker open the case and confirm the quartz Cartier calibre 057. A generic replacement movement, damaged screws or a poor caseback fit should lower confidence. Check the crystal too: one dealer quoting Cartier's specification says mineral, others say sapphire.

Strap and buckle

A correctly signed Cartier gold ardillon buckle and period-correct strap are preferable to aftermarket parts, though a signed buckle does not prove the watch head is genuine.

Battery and water

Ask when the battery was last changed, as leaked electrolyte can corrode a quartz movement. At 30 m / 3 bar this is not a swimming watch, and an opened example should not be trusted as water-resistant without a pressure test.
