The WGTA0011 is a Tank whose case and dial have held still while the names attached to it have not. When Cartier marked the Tank's centenary in September 2017 with a pink-gold Tank Louis Cartier, Hodinkee described the large model as 33.7 × 25.5 × 6.6 mm and powered by the in-house hand-wound calibre 8971 MC. Cartier's US site now lists the same rose-gold case, to the tenth of a millimetre, with calibre 1917 MC, and one line of its description calls it the medium model.

The size is older than the reference. Hodinkee traces the modern large Tank Louis footprint to the 1974 Jumbo, ref. 17011, at 33.5 × 25.5 mm, and Monochrome noted that until 2025 this was the largest Tank LC in the catalogue. That year Cartier introduced a 38.1 × 27.75 mm automatic in rose and yellow gold under the large-model name. Cartier has not explained the relabel, and its own page still says Large Model in the title and medium model in the description, but the bigger watch is the likely reason for it.

On the wrist the WGTA0011 reads as silver, blue and pink: a silvered dial with a fine beaded texture that catches light at an angle, black painted Roman numerals, blued-steel sword hands that turn from black to blue as they move, and a sapphire cabochon in the beaded crown. Whether the calibre behind its solid gold back is the 8971 MC or the 1917 MC is the question every example has to answer.

“The same rose-gold case and dial since 2017, carrying two calibre numbers and two size names: read the movement, not the label.”

Production timeline

Cartier Tank WGTA0011 production years: 2017–present

The WGTA0011 entered the catalogue in 2017 with a hand-wound manufacture calibre, the 8971 MC, in a pink-gold case on the footprint of the 1974 Jumbo. By January 2018 Hodinkee was reporting rose-gold bracelet versions in which, it wrote, the movement had changed to the hand-wound 1917 MC, and that is the calibre Cartier's own page now gives for the strap watch. When the strap model followed is not documented. No Cartier bulletin, serial range or dated example fixes the switch, and Mappin & Webb, an authorised retailer, still prints 8971 MC, so the evidence fits either a running change that retail data has not caught up with or examples of both calibres in circulation.

The second change is the size name, which followed the 2025 automatic described above. Across nine years the case has not changed by a tenth of a millimetre while its calibre number and its size name have each changed once, which is why an example is identified by its case, movement and papers rather than by what a listing calls it.

How to tell it apart

WGTA0011 against its neighbours

The WGTA0011 is framed by the two rose-gold Tank Louis Cartier watches that bracket it in Cartier's current catalogue, the small WGTA0010 below and the 2025 automatic WGTA0346 above, and by the steel Tank Must WSTA0041, which puts a quartz movement in exactly the same 33.7 × 25.5 mm footprint.

Movement labels

Two movement labels across the run

Hodinkee's launch report of September 2017 gives the in-house hand-wound 8971 MC for the pink-gold large model, and Mappin & Webb still lists the WGTA0011 with that calibre today. From the outside it is identical to every later example, so an early warranty date is consistent with this calibre without proving it. Only the movement itself, or Cartier service paperwork naming it, settles the question.

Buying guide

What to check before buying a WGTA0011

With one case and one dial on record, the risks in a WGTA0011 sit in the individual watch: which calibre is fitted, whether the dial and hands are original, and how much gold the case has lost to polishing. Current asking prices run around US$12,000 to 13,000 for used examples and US$15,000 to 16,000 for unworn ones, against the US$15,800 Cartier shows on its US site; those are asking figures, not realized sales. What the money buys is the Tank Louis Cartier, the watch Hodinkee calls the definitive dress watch, in its 1974 Jumbo footprint, in gold, wound by hand, and still in Cartier's catalogue nine years after its launch.

Name the calibre

Because both 8971 MC and 1917 MC are attached to this reference, have Cartier or a watchmaker confirm the calibre, its markings and finishing. A generic manual-wind movement is a major red flag.

Box, papers and service

A full set commands more than an otherwise identical watch, but box and papers alone do not prove authenticity. Check that the reference and dates on the warranty card match the watch, and ask for a service invoice rather than a verbal claim.

Unworn versus worn

Unworn examples with stickers and an unused original strap ask a clear premium over lightly worn ones. Pay it only when the condition can be verified in hand.

Strap and buckle

The semi-matte brown alligator strap and rose-gold ardillon buckle are part of Cartier's specification. Sellers call the strap leather, alligator or crocodile, so check the actual strap and buckle rather than the wording.

Dial, hands and crystal

Under magnification, the painted numerals, railway track and signature should be crisp and the blued hands evenly coloured; refinished dials and swapped hands are hard to see in photographs. Cartier and Mappin & Webb both specify a mineral crystal while some secondary listings say sapphire, so check the crystal on the watch itself.

Case condition

Rose gold is soft. Rounded brancards, softened corners, shallow hallmarks and a loose or oddly coloured cabochon point to heavy polishing or replaced parts. The 30 m rating is a dress-watch rating, so ask for a current pressure test.

Frequently asked

Common questions about the WGTA0011

The WGTA0011 dates from Cartier's 2017 centenary launch of the pink-gold large Tank Louis Cartier. As of 30 October 2026 it was still in Cartier's catalogue, listed on the US site at US$15,800 and marked unavailable online with a back-in-stock notice, so no end date is documented.
