What to check on a Cartier Santos

Screws. The screws on the bezel and the bracelet are the Santos, and they show its history. Heads that are flattened, scratched across the slot or mismatched in finish mean the watch has been opened or polished by hand, and a replacement screw should match the others.

Gold wear. On a two-tone Carrée or Galbée the gold is the bezel, the screws and a row of bracelet links. It wears through on the edges first, and polishing softens the bezel's square corners. Compare the bezel's sharpness with the case beneath it.

Bracelet. The integrated bracelet is part of the watch, and its links stretch with wear. A tight bracelet with its original screwed links adds to the watch; shortened or replacement links should be in the listing.

Movement and dial. The Carrée and the Santos 100 are automatic and should be serviced, wind and keep time; the Galbée 1567 is quartz, so check that it runs and that the case shows no sign of a leaked battery. Dials were refinished on many older Santos, so the Roman numerals and the Cartier signature should be crisp and even. Our verifier notes all of this in hand, and the listing's condition notes say it before you bid.

What a Cartier Santos costs here, by model

Where enough recent sales exist, each model above shows a typical range, built from dealer, auction and Grey Market sales for its reference and rounded to a band. Metal sets most of the range: a solid-gold Carrée at one end, a steel Galbée at the other.

Auctions here open low and run without a reserve, so a lot's closing price is whatever the room decides that week. The sold results on this page are what Cartier Santos watches have actually gone for here, before the buyer's premium.

Frequently asked

Buying a Cartier Santos here

No. Every Grey Market auction runs without a reserve, so the highest bid when the clock runs out wins the watch. Bidding opens low on purpose; the price is set by the people bidding, not by a minimum the seller chose. Auctions run for seven days and extend briefly when a bid lands in the final minutes, so a last-second bid cannot close a lot before everyone has answered it.
